Conference Overview

Transition from School to Further Education, Training and Employment:
Lessons from the Nuffield Review

In October 2003, the Nuffield Foundation launched a six year independent review of 14-19 education and training.  The Report of the Nuffield Review, Education for All: the Future of Education and Training for 14-19 Year Olds, was published in June 2009.  It is the most comprehensive review of what is happening in this phase of education since the Crowther Report fifty years ago.

This conference explores one particular focus of the Review, namely the transition from school to further training and employment, showing where policy and practice need to develop.  This is particularly important at a time of declining employment opportunities, yet when the importance of work-based learning and the role of employers in education are emphasised.

Themes include:

  • Raising the Participation Age: Costs and Benefits
  • Employers, the Labour market and their Impact on 14-19 reforms
  • Current state and future of apprenticeships
  • The role of independent training providers
  • Re-engaging the NEETs
    • Lessons from Rathbone
    • Lessons from Youth Workers
  • Role of FE Colleges
  • Need for Curriculum Change
  • Qualification Reform
  • Partnership: the Development of Local Collaborative Learning Systems

The feedback from this Conference will be used to help shape an Agenda for ‘The Way Forward’.
