Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector

PTLLS Distance Learning Course Overview

The Award in Preparing to Teach/Train in the Lifelong Learning Sector – Level 3 and Level 4 has been developed to meet the needs of those who are required to gain an introductory teaching qualification. 

This award provides:

  • A nationally recognised teaching qualification
  • Progression onto the CTLLS and DTLLS qualifications
Workshop Content
  • Session 1 – Introduction to the PTLLS award and overview of the PTLLS portfolio work required to complete the award.
  • Session 2 – Micro-teach Day.
  • Session 3 – Review of assignment work and completion of PTLLS portfolio work.

Additional support from the PTLLS trainer will take place in the form of email, telephone support and online discussions.  The amount of guided learning hours that will be teacher led is 30 hours.

The NTRL tutors have extensive years experience working in the fields of Education, Training and Development.

They are certified to PGCE or equivalent for FE Sector, and are Assessors, Verifiers or Moderators for various Awarding Bodies in: Skills for Life, PTLLS, CTLLS & DTLLS, and relevant Functional Skills.

 

Who is the workshop designed for?

The award is aimed at any pre-service or in-service candidate who needs an initial award for their role as a teacher, trainer or tutor within an FE college, Adult and Community Learning Centre, Training Providers and those delivering work based training such as within voluntary, community, private and public organisations.

We have found that this course is useful for training providers whose trainers are spread out geographically as the PTLLS course is supported online by the PTLLS tutor via Distance Learning Software.

 

Learning Objectives
  • To understand the roles and responsibilities in relation to teaching
  • To understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches within the candidate’s specialist area
  • To plan, deliver and evaluate a micro-teaching session
  • To observe and evaluate micro-teaching sessions
  • To understand the use of assessment methods and record keeping.

 

What is required to achieve this qualification?

The mandatory assignment of 2500 words required by the awarding bodies to complete this qualification is broken down by NTRL in a series of mini-theoretical and practical assignment work and the successful observation in the Micro-teaching session.  The assignment work is provided in the PTLLS courseware folder and is designed to test the participants’ knowledge and understanding of the whole qualification.

This event will be run as an internal event. It would normally be hosted within your organisation for a group of your staff and specifically aligned to your staff development needs.

Workshop Style

PTLLS training programme are highly participative with a blend of presentation, group exercises and debate.  A comprehensive courseware folder and handouts are provided including checklists, sample documents and reference lists for internet pages for further reading and research.
 

Numbers

Delegate numbers are limited to 15 per workshop.

This enables interaction and involvement with those participants present.

 

Certification

Certification will be conferred to participants by the awarding bodies, Ascentis or CIPD

Different routes to the PTLLS Award

To ensure that your organisation complies with the new regulations, the NTRL Qualifications division are pleased to offer various different ways of obtaining the PTLLS Award, either as a Contact or Distance Learning course.

We offer the PTLLS Distance Learning course as a:

  • 3 day intensive course 
  • A 1 day introduction plus 2 day intensive course
  • 3 days of training over a 3 week period
  • 3 days of training over a 6 week period
  • 3 days spread over a 3 month period

Alternatively, we offer the PTLLS Award Contact course as a:

  • 5 day intensive course 
  • A 3 day plus 2 day intensive course
  • 5 days of training over a 5 week period
  • 5 days of training over a 10 week period
  • 5 days spread over a 5 month period

Delivery dates can be arranged to entirely suit the client organisation and teacher/trainers diaries and timetables for the PTLLS Distance Learning or PTLLS Contact Course.

Next Steps

The next stage of the progression route to ATLS/QTLS status
Participants carry forward the 6 credits achieved through the PTLLS Award into both CTLLS and DTLLS, as it forms a mandatory introductory unit for both qualifications. 

To achieve ATLS status, participants must achieve the CTLLS qualification and undergo Professional Formation (see http://www.ifl.ac.uk/qtls-atls for further information).  To achieve QTLS status, must achieve the DTLLS qualification and undergo Professional Formation (see http://www.ifl.ac.uk/qtls-atls for further information.
