Organisational Development - Implementing Change Successfully
Overview
External presures, Member needs and commercial growth all affect Sports Clubs and Sports Organisations in a way that makes the choice of change or stagnation inevitable at some point. Implementing changes to policy and practice, whilst simultaneously maintaining member/ staff/customer satisfaction and commitment is seldom easy. This is particularly true in Sports Organisations where a wide range of internal and external obstructions can exist.
As the rate of change increases, there is a danger that too much emphasis is given to what needs to change and less importance placed on how to implement the changes effectively. Inadvertently, a culture is created where the commitment from staff to translate the required changes into action is decreased. Ultimately overall performance & morale deteriorates with an adverse impact on the business as a whole.
Many Sports Organisations continually strive to implement change and do not understand why the process was not straight-forward, did not work or failed to deliver the benefits anticipated.
Even what appears at first sight to be relatively simple can end up being fraught with difficulties. Examples can include:
- Enabling staff, trainers and coaches to market new or added value product and services or increase membership
- Diversifying into new areas of business or membership
- Implementation of new training and coaching practices.
- Obtaining Lottery funding
- Changes to observation of teaching and training practice and positive feedback policies
- Introduction of member-centred processes and staff targets
Where several changes are implemented concurrently, or the change more complex, there is far greater potential for problems. Please note: the examples above are provided solely to prompt thought on possible change Sports Organisations may be undertaking or planning.
For Whom
This workshop is designed for Directors and Senior Managers involved in the Sports and Leisure sector.
The nature of the workshop and the desire to provide practical help and guidance means delegate numbers are typically restricted to 10 to 12 per event.
Aims and Objectives
To enable participants to:
- Better understand the issues and factors surrounding effective change management
- Explore planned or review past change to explore ways to improve performance
- Identify approaches that will enable new initiatives and approaches to be implemented successfully
Content
This workshop will provide an opportunity for Directors and senior managers to explore how they can create a greater degree of readiness for change within their own organisations, maximise commitment to change and the potential for success.
The workshop will address the following issues:
- Understanding the process of change.
- Methods and frameworks for collecting information.
- Influencing styles– will they follow you into the jungle?
- Choosing the right strategy – meeting individual, team and organisational goals.
- The role of the senior team, middle managers and first line managers.
- Energising the front line – overcoming resistance, getting commitment.
- Addressing attitudes - Creating a “want to change” environment.
The workshop will include a range of diagnostic tools, analytical frameworks and checklists to support successful change.
Of equal importance will be the opportunity for delegates to discuss current or planned changes in small groups whilst looking at how implementation can be approached more effectively. These sessions are designed to contextualise the points covered earlier and provide practical help for those undertaking change.
Booking an Event
We would be pleased to work with representatives of sports clubs, organisations to run this event locally to them. Whilst it is possible to run this workshop internally for small groups of people, typicaly costs start at £890 + £50/person + VAT a beter better value route is for a club or organisation to host an event and invite representaives from local organisations to participate at a commercial rate. Indeed this option can often offset the cost of the training to the host organisation and even turn the event into income generating activity.
