Developing Content and Writing a Health and Safety Procedures Manual
( 2 day non residential workshop leading to a Draft Manual)
Overview
Most Directors and Managers fail to understand the importance and benefit of an effective procedures manual until it is too late.
The Directors of all businesses and organizations including Sports Organisations, however large or small, are personally responsible for ensuring a safe environment for staff, customers and visitors and the need to both have and to be able to evidence robust safety procedures will become even more important as the Corporate Manslaughter Bill passes through parliament.
The penalties for offences under health and safety legislation can be significant. For example in 2004/5 in the relatively low risk, service industry sector, several convictions resulted in penalties in excess of £100,000 and one conviction penalty was £2million! The average penalty for this low risk sector was £30,537.
Following robust and effective procedures minimizes the risk or accident or incident and having robust embedded procedures reduces the risk of personal litigation for negligence and/or contract loss following any accident or incident.
This 2-day workshop is designed for all managers seeking to minimize the risk of accidents or incidents within their business or organisation.
The workshop is specifically designed for sports clubs and organizations that need to write, update or strengthen their health and safety procedures manual. Where existing health and safety manuals are less than 100 pages in length or have not been updated for several years this course should be considered essential.
For Whom
This 2-day workshop is designed for all Directors and/or Operational/Site/Centre/Department managers within Sports Clubs and Organisations who need to minimize the risk of accidents or incidents. It is especially suited to those clubs/organizations/departments that do have or use Heath and Safety Procedures Manuals or where they have not been updated for some time.
Content
This workshop is designed to enable participants including those with only a limited knowledge of health and safety to produce a comprehensive health and safety manual. Over the course of 2 days the pivotal and core sections of an effective procedures manual are explored. Tutor input, group exercises and discussion ensure delegates understand the key issues and content relating to the 11 sections of the manual listed below. Building on this, delegates explore how to align the document templates, supplied within the workshop, to cover the specific procedures of their individual organizations.
- Health and Safety Policy Statement
- Organisation, Resources and Responsibilities
- Risk Assessment
- Staff Induction and Training
- Fire Safety
- Manual Handling
- Office Safety
- Display Screen Equipment
- First Aid + Incident and Accident Reporting and Investigation
- Health and Safety Audits and Inspections
- Young Persons
The workshop will also cover, albeit in less detail, health and safety procedures relating to procedures in the following areas. These procedures are covered in less detail as they may not be required in some smaller organizations, and it is envisaged that larger organizations will have suitable health and safety procedures in place.
- Health and Safety Committees
- COSHH
- Lone Working
- Working at Heights
- Maintenance
Finally Participants will consider ways to extend their Health and Safety Procedures Manual to cover areas that are specific to their industry and/or sector.
